I know I haven’t mentioned it in a while, but I’m still riding my bike to work! Most days, anyway. While I might grumble sometimes about strapping my helmet on in the mornings, I do appreciate the exercise and fresh air (well, “fresh”–this is the Central Valley, where we welcome people with some of the worst air pollution in the US!), but biking to work does make things more complicated when I want to wear my…hmm…impractical pieces of clothing.

My solution? Wear what I can, slap on a pair of bike shorts or exercise pants, and change when I get to work. Thank goodness we’ve got large bathrooms.

It also means that I have to change back into my biking gear to ride home, and then change back into my work clothes in order to take outfit pictures. But if I didn’t, y’all would miss out on my ridiculous attempts at twirling and jumping pictures, and we wouldn’t want that, would we?

I didn’t think so.

Do you make special exceptions for impractical clothing, or just go without? Does the nature of your work preclude certain types or styles of garment? Our department has a few rules about acceptable garments in summer vs. winter, and we’re also not allowed to wear jeans at all–not even nice jeans, not even on Fridays. Sniff sniff. (Well, we’re allowed to wear jeans this coming Friday if we donate $5 as a breast cancer fundraiser thing, but I realized that I don’t really have work-nice jeans anymore, so it’s a moot point. Boo and hoo.)

  1. For me, pencil skirts are impractical so I’ve removed them from my closet almost entirely. The only pencil skirts I have now, except for one, are knit because they are so much easier to ride bikes in. And, during the winter, maxi skirts and jeans basically disappear from my wardrobe because they don’t dry quickly. Suede is another thing I’ve had to limit.

  2. Mia, that skirt is the best thing I’ve seen all week. I’d never take it off if I looked that good in it!

Sometimes I want to wear a pair of higher heels that I think would be better with an outfit, but not all darn day. Enter commuter flip-flops, or ballet flats in cooler weather. No way am I hiking around the grocery store after work in heels, just for the effect.
