Tee and skirt: Goodwill — Sandals: Dansko — Belt: Thrifted — Bracelet and earrings: Hand-me-down — Pendant: Gift from Katie!

I feel strongly that this skirt likes me and wants me to succeed; it puts forth effort to be as flattering as humanly possible when I need it to be.

In return, I try to drool on it as little as possible.

(I really can’t promise no drool whatsoever. Case in point, I wore this outfit to the dentist yesterday and may have dribbled a bit while an extern was taking impressions of my teeth for a night guard.)

I like experimenting with unusual or “unflattering” silhouettes too, but when my self-confidence is low I tend to rely on traditionally flattering outfits for a boost.

I recognize that this is largely due to Society and the fact that women’s perceived worth is tied to our appearance, but I know very few women who have managed to completely deprogram that part of their brain, so I’m gonna give myself a break on this one. I like to think that this blog is a way for me to reclaim my appearance as having value to me, too, so let’s put it down as self-care, mmkay?

  1. That is very traditionally flattering on you. I am scared of skirts with waists like that. (Perhaps it is called a paper bag waist skirt? I’m not quite sure.) But since I think we have very similar proportions, perhaps I should try it! Also, I’m oddly excited you’re getting a night guard. Mine changed my life when I got it about 7 years ago. I didn’t even realize how much pain/discomfort I was in until I got the guard and it went away. Yay for self-care!

  2. I love the big mushroom necklace!! Also I’m not sure if your earrings are meant to look like little beetles, but they do. ^_^

I think making sure you look good to yourself is important. Your self-reflection holds the most value, and can make a huge difference in your confidence. ❤ Always remember to love yourself.

  3. I love the colors in this outfit.

Ugh, impressions. The last ones I got were photo mapped, thankfully. I can’t deal with the goo. I always feel like I’m choking.

This is a really great quote– “I like to think that this blog is a way for me to reclaim my appearance as having value to me” and I feel like I could probably write an entire blog post on it. But I actually think that you would write it better (if you wanted to) because you are more thoughtful than I am.

  4. This is a snazzy little outfit to wear to the dentist! The colors look really good together.

I’m with you on trying out unflattering looks. Although probably every outfit on my blog is a high waisted skirt or a belted dress. But I do really try the occasional shift dress or something like that. It feels good to break out of society’s standards.

By the way, thanks for the comment on my new hair! I’ve been pulling some photos of you for inspiration to direct me to what I should wear with short hair. It’s been a week now and my closet still looks like a giant puzzle to me! haha Hopefully I figure it out while it’s still in this freshly cropped stage.
