Pink socks weren’t my first choice for this outfit, but sometimes you gotta go with what’s clean.

20151125-IMG_5081

Getting up and dressed in the mornings has been a struggle lately–it’s cold, it’s dark, and everything’s kind of a mess. I should really help myself out by working up the energy to organize outfits the night before.

My morning hair-drying experiments continue apace, though, so at least that’s something.

When I put this outfit together I wasn’t sure about it, so I asked Mike if I looked weird.

20151120-IMG_5074

His response? “Usually.” Wise guy.

I know this might knock your socks off, but this necklace? Used to be two necklaces.

20151119-IMG_5064

I know, I’ll let you catch your collective breath. I don’t know if I can even delve far back enough into this blog’s past to find one of the original shorter incarnations, because one of the problems with them being shorter was I just didn’t wear them much. Same problem as the Tom Waits necklace, which I lengthened a while back by adding some chain to it.

20151119-IMG_5067

I guess longer necklaces are just my deal? I dunno, man. Anyway, I just made a few modifications to the two vintage amber necklaces my mom gave me so that I could fix them together, and here we are! Truly mind-blowing work, I know. I’m impressed with myself too.

Lately I’ve been thinking about getting a tarantula. Ideally I’d keep it in my office at work, although the jury’s still out on whether tarantulas fall under my workplace’s “no animals” policy.

20151116-IMG_5056

I actually have asked my supervisor to find out what upper management thinks; if and when I hear back, I’ll check around to see if any of my coworkers are prohibitively arachnophobic. I really don’t want to make work a bad or upsetting environment for anyone–I just think tarantulas are neat, and have ever since my kindergarten class had one (named “Harry,” of course) as a pet.

20151116-IMG_5058

If the option is open to me, I have to figure out the best way to choose one. There are pet stores, of course, but is adopting one better? Are tarantula rescues even a thing? These are the hard-hitting questions I have to ask myself as I think about how to proceed.

20151116-IMG_5060

I’d also have to pick a species. Preliminary research tells me that “grassland or desert” tarantulas are best for a beginner, and I do want to tread carefully in choosing one that I’ll be able to appropriately care for. The females of many tarantula species can live for decades, so I need to make sure I’m not entering into things lightly! I’m reading up on the subject (naturally), and it’s pretty amazing stuff even if I ultimately decide not to bring one home. For instance: did you know that in addition to shedding their exoskeletons when they molt, tarantulas can replace some internal organs, such as their genitalia? Fascinating!

This outfit is something I puzzled together to go see Vienna Teng again!

20151107-IMG_5047

I have a penchant for seeing her in November, I guess.

20151107-IMG_5050

This time it wasn’t just Vienna, but also most of the rest of the cast of The Fourth Messenger, a musical about a modern-day female Buddha. They performed a selection of the songs and then did a signing for the album release party! Neat!

20151107-IMG_5051

I’ll be honest–I just don’t know if I’m a big fan of musicals anymore. There were definitely a lot of good parts to The Fourth Messenger, though, and I’d recommend it if musicals are your thing. The performers were all excellent, particularly Cailan Rose and Reggie D. White. Vienna did some solo music after The Fourth Messenger, too, and that was delightful as always. A good outing to inaugurate my new leggings, indeed!

I’ve told you I’m a member of a brunch club, yeah? Inasmuch as a bunch of friends and I meet about once a month in and around San Francisco to try out various restaurants’ brunch offerings. (And okay, we have a spreadsheet. Rigorous documenting of brunches!)

20151105-IMG_5038

Last brunch club we met at CB’s house (she of the Vintage Fashion Faire) so that, after our delicious potluck, we could do a clothing swap! I haven’t been to a clothing swap in ages, so I really enjoyed the opportunity to trade things with this particular group of friends.

20151105-IMG_5039

Anyhow, CB put in this wrap dress into the pile and I was ON IT. Great pattern, nice wrap, super comfortable–thanks for the awesome castoff, CB! She’s a gem, that one.

20151105-IMG_5042

Unrelatedly, I’m trying a new thing with my hair where I blow-dry it upside-down on low with a diffuser, since it’s edging on too cold to leave for work with wet hair. This gets things dry while (mostly) maintaining the curls, but it also gives me kind of a silly amount of volume. Big hair, no heart?

The other day I was rooting around in the closet for my store of cold-weather clothing and I happened to find a box…of shoes.

20151103-IMG_5029

Turns out that’s where my pink Frye flats went. I’d been missing them and a few other pairs–like some wedge sandals and several pairs of heels–for quite a while, and had pretty much given up on finding any of them.

20151103-IMG_5031

I guess I must have packed them up for our last move, and then they sat in a closet for a year and a half without ever being investigated. (No, you have too much stuff.)

20151103-IMG_5033

Honestly, I hadn’t missed the heels much, if at all, but I’m pleased to have these guys back in my repertoire. They’re still waterstained and altogether not a terribly robust-feeling pair of flats, but I do like them. They’re pink!
