After six months of wandering astray, I return like the prodigal daughter to Gracey’s Literary Stylings! Momentous!

I had a good handful of books to choose from this time around, and after much (okay, some) deliberation, I went with Nalo Hopkinson’s Midnight Robber. It’s a hard book to summarize, but basically: girl, Tan-Tan, grows up on a Caribbean-colonized planet as the daughter of a mayor; mayor commits a felony and escapes with Tan-Tan to a parallel dimension used as a prison world by the main planet; Tan-Tan grows up among hardened criminals; and things progress from there.

20160111-IMG_5245

It’s a really excellent novel–possibly one of the best I read in 2015, actually. Hopkinson creates two rich, vivid worlds in Toussaint and New Half-Way Tree, and a complicated young protagonist in Tan-Tan. The book is written in patwah and has a gorgeous rhythm and poetry to it, and many pieces of the story–including the relationship between colonizing humans and colonized alien species–are done with what feels like a great deal of thought and care. I would like to give a strong content warning about the sexual abuse of children; it’s a deeply-entwined part of the story, and I wouldn’t recommend you pick it up if that’s going to affect you adversely.

It’s hard to do the book justice with one outfit, especially when it’s winter and that outfit doesn’t feature any feathered crowns from the Miss Universe pageant, but I did my best. The boots and pants are meant to represent Tan-Tan’s survivalist teenagehood, since I couldn’t really wear a dhoti to work in January; the sweater is at least close to saffron yellow, Tan-Tan’s favorite childhood color; the earrings are a nod to the Afrofuturism of the novel (although I’d like to acknowledge that wax print is not as strong in Caribbean culture as, say, madras); and the wee skull necklace is for the Midnight Robber persona that pops up repeatedly around the book’s Carnival scenes and which Tan-Tan eventually adopts as her own.

Ultimately, Midnight Robber is an intense book that I very much recommend if you feel up to the things I mentioned above; Tan-Tan doesn’t have an easy life, and her suffering is not shied away from. I think there’s a lot of reward if you can forge on through, though. Now go check out Gracey’s Literary Stylings post, and those of the other folks who’ve linked up!

This getup worked pretty well so long as I didn’t lift my arms above my head.

20151209-IMG_5144

I knew the lengths might be a bit buggy but I tried it anyway, just to see. End result: it distracted me throughout the day exactly as much as I expected it would!

20151209-IMG_5145

I’m still not comfortable with crop-tops, and I don’t know if I ever will be, but maybe a deliberately short length would feel more intentional than regular shirts on a slightly-too-long torso?

I knew I hadn’t worn my Duo boots in a long time, but has it really been two years? Good gravy.

20151204-IMG_5112

The thing about those Duo boots is that…well, they hurt. I don’t know if it’s an issue of them not being broken-in enough or if they just don’t suit my legs, but the crumple zone at the ankle rubs blisters something fierce. Even when I wear thick socks with them, by the end of the day I end up hobbling.

20151204-IMG_5125

I haven’t wanted to wear them but spent too much money to justify giving them away, so naturally they ended up in the back of my closet. I guess it’s time to look up the town cobbler. (Probably located in the same strip mall as the town smith and the town fishwife, huh?)

This outfit was pretty much inevitable, I think. It was just a matter of time.

20151009-IMG_4929

It works, right? I mean, I think it does, and I’m okay if you don’t. Life is a rich tapestry!

20151009-IMG_4932

Honestly, it’s not that surprising a mix to have made, even though it felt really edgy when I was getting dressed this morning. Same-size florals, both with pink/yellow/orange. Like I said, inevitable.

20151009-IMG_4935

did manage to keep from wearing my Labor Day Pow-Wow earrings, which itself feels inevitable every time I wear these pants.

Those earrings, these pants, and these sandals. They make a very compelling case for themselves.

I had no idea when I wrote the post from two Fridays ago that I’d already talked about my ball chair at work three months before that. Oops.

20150925-IMG_4827

I am given to repeat myself, it seems.

20150925-IMG_4829

Actually, you probably already knew that; I’ve probably already written about it on here, even. I have a tendency to tell the same stories over and over and to forget what I’ve already said to most of the people I see every day.

20150925-IMG_4833

That’s another very human foible, but it is embarrassing when I unintentionally write the same blog post two or three times. My life must not be terribly interesting, because evidently I run out of topics! I’ll try to get myself into a couple of scraps and/or adventures sometime soon so I have something new to tell you all about.

I took a few days off from work to try and scare away what felt like an impending cold, and all of a sudden it’s fall and shit?! I’m insulted that nobody asked me first.

20150923-IMG_4806

I can’t dawdle about taking my after-work photos now; these were taken at 6:30 and I had some issues because the light was going. Soon enough I’ll have to do photos in the morning for a few months, so I hope you’re all excited about sleepface and wet hair.

Dang, I look a little swaybacked here, huh? I’ve been trying to work on my posture but it doesn’t seem to have had much of an effect.

20150915-IMG_4744

A month or few ago I got one of those balance ball chairs at work–someone else didn’t want it anymore and it was headed to surplus–and I hoped it would help me remember to keep my shoulders and hips aligned.

20150915-IMG_4745

But I’ve also read that ball chairs’ ability to improve spinal problems is questionable at best, so maybe I should go back to basics and walk around with a hardcover book on my head.

20150915-IMG_4754

(Sidenote: my mom went to the Iberian Peninsula recently and brought me back these handmade hammered earrings! They were a little overshadowed at first by the incredible tin of sardines she included in the same package, so I’m anxious to give them their due.)
