I took a sick day on Monday thanks to brain problems (which is why I took the day off posting too). Well, brain problems and also lack of sleep. They’re kind of co-morbid for me, doncha know.

Anyway, I didn’t get dressed until I had to go to therapy in the evening, so I wore the outfit again on Tuesday to work. I mean, why not? The therapy session left me feeling a lot better and I felt pretty cute in it.

I am greatly devoted to my therapist, by the way. It took me a little while to find the right one, but we work really well together and most sessions just feel like talking to a friend.

An incredibly smart friend who calls me on my thinking distortions and gives me opposite-action homework, but you know.

Some days I just can’t locate my glasses to save my life, you know?

(Worry not; I found them later underneath a bag of tortilla chips.)

I’ve only been wearing glasses since late high school, so to me, my glasses-free face is just as much Mia as the bespectacled version is.

I’m not sure if this is the same for folks out there in Internetlandia, since I’ve had them the entire time I’ve been a part of this blog. (Well, except for that one ill-advised summer. Hopefully nobody’s married to that image of me.)

I do think I look a little more barefaced than usual in these pictures on account of having my hair pulled back from my face–but as per uzh, glasses or no, I’m not wearing a lick of makeup. Does my face look weird without glasses to you, gentle readers? Go on, it’s okay. You can tell me.

I feel like this getup was pretty meh until I added the bigass earrings.

Bigass earrings help everything! Everything except for earlobe sensitivities, I suppose.

Anyway, getting the idea to add them to the outfit transformed it from “dangerously close to patriotic” to “lots of bright colors, why not,” which is really my preferred way of being.

Will I ever tire of Too Many Bright Colors? It’s hard to say. Maybe someday I’ll go pastel! Or goth! Or pastel goth!

It’s good to know that if I do, my modest collection of skulls will be able to carry over.

Here’s a thing: I wrote an Alternate History!

See, my friend Kate Schapira has a project called Climate Anxiety Counseling, wherein she sets up a booth and talks to people in her town of Providence, RI about their anxieties, climate-centered or otherwise. She writes their thoughts down and then composes Alternate Histories to explore how we might prioritize things differently in our world to alleviate these anxieties.

They’re lovely little pieces of fiction–this is one of my favorites–and as someone who struggles with a lot of anxiety in relation to climate change, I’ve found reading her work very helpful. The Alternate Histories look at people frankly but with optimism, seeing how we can engage with each other and the spaces we live in.

So, with all that as introduction, Kate invited me to participate in a phase of the project where guests write Alternate Histories of their own, and even though I was scared (of thinking about climate change, of doing a substandard job, of missing my self-imposed deadline), I accepted.

I’ll be honest–I struggled to work on my piece because of the physical symptoms my anxiety has. I spent a lot of time sitting at my computer with my heart racing and hands shaking as I tried to breathe evenly. I wanted to avoid, avoid, avoid, but I managed to sit with the feeling and write, and now I have an Alternate History to share with you! The climate anxiety counseling session it’s a response to hit very close to home, so it feels pretty personal.

I appreciate how Kate and her work have challenged me to face something I have a very real fear of, and encouraged me to think about reorganizing my life. She writes thoughtfully, generously, and with a clear head, and as she’s also a poet, her way of expressing ideas feels both beautiful and like truth. There’s a core there that truly believes we can take care of each other and steward the planet, if we’re willing to work.

Go check out Climate Anxieties Counseling. It may be challenging, but it’s the kind of challenge that helps you level up.

My hair is aaaalllllmost long enough to wear this headband to keep it back. Almost.

It still kind of feels like it’s going to slip off my head, and I have to practice wearing it so that it looks casually cute instead of like a mess, but we’re getting there.

It keeps my hair out of my face, anyway, which I sorely need since I haven’t had a haircut in like four months. It’s about chin-length in front and I’m just not into having a cryshield anymore, you guys.

I haven’t yet decided if I’ll get bangs snipped into it next time or let the front keep growing along with everything else. Eventually it has to stop getting in my eyes, right?

Please say yes. Please.

If you’ve talked to a Californian (or been a Californian) in the last 48 hours, you know it’s hot here.

It hit 102F here yesterday, so something light was a necessity. Enter the kurti.

I came across a few Fabindia garments during my last thrifting excursion–the prints are gorgeous and the fabric dries quickly, and they fit wonderfully, so here we are. To my understanding, this and the other piece I got are kurtis or short kurtas, but please correct me if I’m wrong!

I looked up Fabindia before buying the shirts, just in case the company’s history turned out to be not-so-great. I feel a little weird about the founder, but altogether I think I’m okay with things, especially since I bought the items secondhand.

Sometimes I overthink things, but I just want to be a good person. Really.

I scrambled to put this outfit together yesterday morning and honestly thought it was going to be a throwaway that I didn’t take pictures of, but I like it!

I can’t quite pinpoint what makes it interesting enough to me to post. Is it the gray in addition to red and black?

Maybe it’s just this necklace. It tangles so easily, but getting it straight is kind of soothing. Like cleaning a dryer’s lint trap.

(Don’t act like that’s weird.)

Anyway, plain outfits. Sometimes they work out! Who knows why? Who knows anything? Not me. I can’t explain tectonic shifts or why Carrot Top looks the way he does. What are you doing in my living room? Go on, get out of there.

Outfit Post: 6/1/15

Speaking of voluminous tops, this button-front that I found at the Vintage Fashion Fair last month is definitely a little too big, but I definitely don’t care.

It was discounted and therefore quite a bit cheaper than most of the other vintage wares I’d been admiring–including that incredible Danish necklace–and the same booth had a gorgeous (and expensive) Marimekko dress that was tragically too small.

I saw this shirt while returning the dress to the rack and its print completely won me over, so I didn’t fight the impulse very hard. It may be a little oversized, but it delights me.

The first of June is basically the first day of summer–I don’t care what any of your fancy calendars say–so bright yellow, red, orange, and pink seemed like just the thing, accented with a little green and blue.

Almost a rainbow! A rainbow plus the void of a black hole that is my pants. That equals summer, right?

Hello hello! Took an unscheduled few days off from the blog, but now I’m BACK. I really should have slid in with some super-cool sunglasses, but we can’t have everything.

This shirt was a sale buy when I was ordering something else from J.Crew. I’ve been looking for a nice sunshiny yellow shirt and thought this might be the one, so I indulged myself for $10 and waited.

It turned out to be a bit more neon than my ideal, but that’s okay! It plays nicely with my neon pink socks. I really like wood with neon, for some reason–maybe because I was both a tetra and a carpenter in a past life?–so here we are. I promise not to resent the fact that you weren’t exactly what I was looking for, neon shirt. I like you on your own merits.

Here’s a really lazy outfit that we haven’t seen the like of in quite some time. I honestly wasn’t going to get dressed at all on Sunday, but then Mike’s dad invited us out to lunch.

Rarely have I been more reluctant to change out of pajamas, let me tell you.

At first, giraffe dress was going to see me through this difficult ordeal alone; I ended up adding the jeans because of the unusual cold spell we’ve been having. (By cold, I mean mid-60s to mid-70s. I recognize that Winnipeg got snow over this past weekend, and I’ll sit in the sun an extra five minutes for all of Manitoba tomorrow.)

So, yeah. Some red and orange shades that didn’t necessarily work together, but it got me out of the house, where I had a pretty good salad. Could’ve been worse.
